How Grade Point Average (GPA) Is Calculated

GPA represents your average academic performance by weighting your letter grade points by each course credit value.

Unweighted vs Weighted Scales

Standard college GPA uses an unweighted 4.0 scale (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0). High schools often apply weighted scales giving an extra 0.5 points for Honors and 1.0 points for Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB).

How to Use the College & High School GPA Calculator

  1. Step 1: Select your letter grade and credit hours for each course.
  2. Step 2: Select Honors or AP weighting if applicable.
  3. Step 3: Optionally enter your prior GPA and completed credits for a cumulative projection.
  4. Step 4: Review your calculated semester and cumulative GPA.
Formula: GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours (where Quality Points = Grade Points × Credits)
